The Kimberley Aboriginal Caring for Culture Project is part of the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre’s (KALACC’s) effort to improve resource distribution, foster a collaborative approach between Aboriginal stakeholder organisations and the Government, and address the broader impact of intergenerational trauma and suicide that overwhelmingly grips the Kimberley region.
The objectives of the project were to:
- Map and gap the current service provision related to Aboriginal culture in the Kimberley region
- Foster collaboration and cohesion amongst Kimberley Aboriginal Non-Government Organisation (NGO) service providers
- Contribute to the development of macro Government policies and strategies
- Contribute to important research into and strategies towards improving Indigenous outcomes
In 2018/19 KALACC commissioned two significant pieces of research as part of the Caring for Culture Project:
1. The Kimberley Aboriginal Caring for Culture Consultation Report (KACfC Consultation Report) 2019
The report is the culmination of the year-long consultation process with over 60 Aboriginal organisations in the Kimberley region and is intended to:
- Represent the preliminary collation and summation of the materials gathered in consultation with more than 60 Aboriginal-led organisations
- Provide a collective voice for various key Kimberley Aboriginal organisations around approaches to caring for culture
- Showcase culturally-based activities, partnerships, achievements, aspirations across sectors in the Kimberley region

2. The Kimberley Schools Aboriginal Culture Program Mapping Project - Data and Analysis Report 2019
This research, led by Dr. Maya Haviland, undertook research into school-based local Aboriginal culture education programs in the Kimberley region of WA. It provides a unique snapshot of the activities of schools in the Kimberley related to teaching and learning local Aboriginal culture and language, and examined the structural factors that enable and constrain these programs.
Funding for the Kimberley Aboriginal Caring for Culture Project was provided through the Commonwealth Suicide Prevention Trial program and resourcing allocated to the WA Primary Health Alliance. Further contributions were made by Aarnja Limited and LotteryWest.
